A Fresh Holiday Option on Hulu
Audiences searching for festive holiday content outside of traditional broadcast networks and standard subscription libraries now have a new option to consider. Hulu recently added a brand new romantic feature titled The 12 Dates of Christmas to its streaming catalog, giving subscribers an alternative to typical seasonal programming.
The timing of the release coincides with the peak of the winter holiday season, arriving just as platforms everywhere begin populating their schedules with romantic comedies and feel-good holiday films.
Plot and Character Journey
The narrative centers around Christina, a dedicated workaholic shop owner who has consistently placed her professional ambitions far ahead of her personal life and romantic relationships.
To avoid attending an upcoming family holiday gathering completely single, Christina agrees to let her best friend organize a series of twelve distinct dates leading up to Christmas in the hopes of meeting the right partner.
Streaming Ranks and Competition
Following its premiere on November 6th, the holiday feature quickly climbed the platform's internal popularity rankings, securing a position in the number two spot on Hulu's Top 15 Movies list.
While it faced little direct competition within Hulu's own fresh holiday release slate, it debuted alongside heavy-hitting seasonal titles across rival streaming services and networks during the exact same week.
Rival Platform Releases
Over on Netflix, viewers were greeted by the book-to-screen adaptation titled A Dog's Perfect Christmas, which features performances by Dennis Quaid and Milo Ventimiglia.
Simultaneously, the Hallmark Channel expanded its seasonal library by rolling out multiple fresh original movies, including projects titled Merry Memories and Holiday Unplugged.
A Fan-Favorite Onscreen Reunion
A major promotional selling point for the Hulu release is that it acts as an onscreen reunion for Pretty Little Liars actors Lucy Hale and Ian Harding.
The two previously portrayed the famous romantic pairing of Aria Montgomery and Ezra Fitz during the height of the popular teen drama series, generating significant nostalgia among longtime television fans.
Familiar Faces in the Rom-Com Space
Both lead actors bring substantial experience in the romantic comedy and holiday movie genres to their latest project together.
Lucy Hale previously led mid-budget rom-coms like Puppy Love and the film adaptation of The Hating Game, while Ian Harding appeared in Netflix's holiday film Our Little Secret alongside Lindsay Lohan and starred opposite Lacey Chabert in Lost in Paradise.
